Engell, Short discuss income tax, wildfire funding, housing and late-night debates on KOMW

The lawmakers focused on the proposed income tax (SB 6346), raising concerns about its constitutionality, potential economic impacts on employers and agriculture, and what they see as long-term pressure for higher spending. Engell also highlighted House legislation, including his bill to clarify supervision rules for advanced practice providers, warning that without the change some rural hospitals could face staffing challenges.

Wildfire preparedness funding was another priority, with Short working to restore tens of millions of dollars for prevention, forest health, and rapid response efforts important to Central and Eastern Washington communities.

The discussion also touched on housing affordability, regulatory proposals, and budget decisions under consideration, including the use of one-time funds for ongoing expenses, as lawmakers head into the busiest stretch of the session.
